Pharmacological Screening of Pithecellobium dulce benth for its antidiabetic and other potentials

Rao C. A. et al; (2003) evaluated hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic activity of ethanolic fraction of fruits of Terminalia pallid at different doses in normal and alloxan diabetic rats. The ethanolic extract of fruits of TP at a dose of 0.5 g/kg b.w. could produce a significant fall in blood glucose levels by about 24% in diabetic rats, after 5 h of treatment. But none of these extracts could produce any hypoglycemic effect in normal rats. The aqueous and hexane extracts of fruits of TP have not shown significant antihyperglycemic activity. Hence the ethanolic extracts may be considered to have good antihyperglycemic active principles without causing any hypoglycemic effect unlike insulin and other synthetic drugs.
